Assessing safety in Willoughby’s local streets
PDC Consultants was engaged to undertake a Road Safety Audit of two locations within the City of Willoughby local government area to inform potential Safer Roads funding applications. The audit reviewed existing conditions at 270 Willoughby Road in Naremburn and the proposed pedestrian refuge on Mowbray Road near Avian Crescent in Lane Cove, with the objective of identifying road safety hazards for all transport modes.
Road safety auditing expertise
The audit was completed in accordance with Austroads and Transport for NSW guidelines, and highlighted several key issues, including excessive vehicle speeds, poor pedestrian crossing behaviour, sight line obstructions, insufficient refuge storage space, and unsafe driveway or intersection geometries. PDC was later engage to recommend mitigation measures, such as installation of pedestrian crossings, kerb extensions, improved signage, and traffic calming treatments. The findings provided Council with a clear evidence base to support prioritisation of safety improvements at all locations.
