Improving safety in local streets
PDC Consultants was engaged to prepare a Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) Plan for the Chatswood North precinct on behalf of the City of Willoughby. The study area included residential streets bounded by the Pacific Highway, Fullers Road, Mowbray Road, and the North Shore Rail Line. The project responded to concerns around traffic speed, pedestrian safety, network permeability, and traffic volumes on local roads.
Data analysis and design development
The LATM process involved community consultation, traffic and parking surveys, site inspections, and a review of crash data and local conditions. A recommended package of treatments was developed to address key issues, including raised thresholds, kerb extensions, pedestrian crossings, one-way conversions, and improved wayfinding. The strategy was designed to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety, moderate vehicle speeds, and promote local amenity without displacing traffic to surrounding streets. The plan was considered supportable and aligned with Council’s strategic objectives for local traffic management.
