Improving pedestrian safety in high-activity areas

In 2021, Strathfield Municipal Council received grant funding to investigate the implementation of 40 km/h speed zoning restrictions for the Strathfield, Homebush, and Homebush West town centres.

This initiative was part of the Transport for NSW High Pedestrian Activity Areas (HPAA) Program, funded by the NSW Centre for Road Safety, and commenced in 2023.

The program’s central objective aligns with the NSW Road Safety Strategy’s Vision Zero, aiming to reduce road accidents to the greatest extent possible.

Key areas identified for safety enhancements

The identified town centres were selected due to significant pedestrian activity generated by nearby transport hubs and features that increase the potential for serious accidents.

The program focuses on creating self-enforcing 40 km/h speed environments through traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian infrastructure.

Delivering comprehensive traffic and pedestrian solutions

PDC Consultants conducted a detailed desktop review, vehicular and pedestrian surveys, and site inspections to analyse the existing conditions.

Preliminary recommendations, including changes to speed limits, pedestrian infrastructure improvements, and traffic calming measures, were developed and refined through workshops with Council officers and presentations at Council’s Local Traffic Committee.

These proposed measures aim to create safer, more pedestrian-friendly environments in these busy urban centres.
